Unified Namespace Basics - Video Series

If you're exploring Unified Namespace or considering it for your next project, we have created a YouTube series that breaks down the fundamentals of UNS in an easy-to-understand way.

Unified Namespace Basics - Video Series

01 | Automation Pyramid and the Unified Namespace

In the first video of our UNS Basics series, we introduce the Automation Pyramid as a system for plant control. We cover the data analytics challenges it presents and introduce the Unified Namespace as a solution. You'll learn how the Automation Pyramid connects with the Unified Namespace, following United Manufacturing Hub's approach. We also discuss where historical UNS data is stored.

02 | Event-Driven Architecture and MQTT

In part two, we explain Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) and the role of the MQTT protocol and brokers. Both EDA and MQTT are foundational components of the Unified Namespace.

03 | ISA95 Topic Hierarchy

In the third video, we define a semantic hierarchy for the UNS based on the ISA-95 Part 2 standard. After a theoretical overview, we demonstrate how to create this hierarchy in the UMH Management Console.

04 | Sending Data to a Message Broker

In part four, we discuss which data is sent to the message broker. Given the relatively small volume of data in Operational Technology (OT), all the data is sent to the message broker regardless of the immediate presence of a consumer. This approach allows us to decide later which data to retain or discard.

05 | Data Contextualisation / Stream Processing

In the fifth video, we explain how the unstructured data from all producers is further processed. Known as data contextualization or stream processing, this step organizes data topics and message structures to match the semantic hierarchy. We demonstrate the process with an example and list common tools used.

06 | Protocol Converters

In the final part, we explain the concept of protocol converters. A protocol converter is used when data is not communicated using the MQTT protocol. We explore how various data types are converted and which tools the United Manufacturing Hub uses for protocol conversion.
